Housing

• On campus

On campus housing is coordinated through the Residence Life Office at Rensselaer. You should have received information regarding on campus housing with your acceptance packet from the Office of Admissions. Exchange students will receive Housing information from the Exchange Program Director at Rensselaer. On campus housing is assigned on a space-available basis and is not guaranteed, except to freshman students.

Rensselaer encourages international students to reside on campus for your first year to help you become accustomed to American culture and learn about the services that are available both on and off campus.

Advantages to living on campus are: convenience to the academic campus, all rooms are furnished, utilities are included, local phone service is included, all rooms are wired for Ethernet connections, and residences are close to athletic and recreational facilities. There is no deposit required and room charges will be included in your Rensselaer student bill.

Rensselaer only assigns rooms to freshman before they arrive in America. Freshmen are required to live on campus their first year. Other students are not assigned on-campus housing until they arrive.

Once you sign hour Rensselaer Housing Contract with Residence Life, it cannot be broken. You must honor it even if the space is different from what you expected or is more expensive.

If you plan to live on campus, and will be arriving before Residence halls open please contact Residence Life to make arrangements, otherwise you will need to make reservations at a local hotel until the Residence Halls open. Residence Halls open on Friday, january 22, 2010.

Off campus

If you intend to live off campus, you should arrive by mid-January. The ISSS office will help as much as possible in finding off campus accommodations, but you may also need the help of friends or other students from your home country. You should also be prepared to pay a deposit and perhaps buy or rent furniture and household items.

We urge you not to sign any lease or contract for off campus housing which you do not fully understand. Leases or contracts cannot be broken without financial loss to you. A lawyer is available and will not charge you to look at a lease once you arrive at Rensselaer. ISSS staff can tell you how to contact the lawyer.

The Rensselaer Student Union maintains an off campus housing database for students to access. If you are interested in off campus housing, please Click Here

Family Housing

Family housing is available on campus for married students or guardians of children. You must contact the Residence Life Office well in advance of arriving on campus because the demand for space is quite high and there is a waiting list for family housing.

Students who do not have housing arrangements prior to their arrival can choose to stay in a local hotel while they look for permanent housing.
