Swearer and Newman Awards

Each year, Campus Compact recognizes students for extraordinary service to their communities through the Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award and the Frank Newman Leadership Award. These prestigious national awards highlight public service commitments and individual leadership.

The Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award is for non-seniors at four-year colleges and all students at community colleges; it recognizesa leader or emerging leader by a small contribution to their chosen program and a $1,250 grant for professional development. The Frank Newman Leadership Award is for sophomores and juniors at four-year colleges and all community college students, and recognizes a student with demonstrated financial need through a prize of $5,000 for project expenses and/or personal needs.

The process for nomination and selection of awardees has been streamlined in order to give more students the opportunity to be considered. Applications for each award must be made via the on-line forms. The 2008 deadline for both is the same, March 21st. Each state will select several nominees for consideration at the national level. (New York Campus Compact will also make separate awards to their nominees.)
