Glossary of terms

Affiliation: The fraternity or sorority in which the individual belongs

Alumna/Alumnus: An initiated member which is no longer in college

Associate Member: Also known as a new member; a student who has accepted the bid of a fraternity or sorority

Bid: A formal invitation of membership in a fraternity of sorority

Brother: A member of a fraternity

Chapter: The local group of a national organization

Initiation: A formal ceremony in which a new member becomes an active member of a fraternity of sorority

New Member: Also known as an associate member; a student who has accepted the bid of a fraternity or sorority

Rush: A process of mutual selection through which a fraternity or sorority gains new members

Rushee: An eligible student who is interested in becoming a member of a fraternity or sorority

Sister: A member of a sorority
