SERVICES AVAILABLE AT RENSSELAER FOR STUDENTS WITH MOBILITY LIMITATIONS
If you have limitations in walking, or use mobility devices such as a cane, crutches or wheelchair, you are urged to contact Disability Services as early as possible to facilitate planning. You may be interested in the following services:
- "Hand scheduling" of your classroom locations is available to ensure that they are accessible to you and conveniently located.
- Campus maps available at the Visitor Information Center and Disability Services indicate accessibility of buildings and show locations of designated parking spaces.
- Contact Campus Parking if you have a state parking permit for drivers with disabilities and are interested in using designated parking spaces on campus. Be sure to check the general parking rules and permits, as well as the map of designated spaces.
- Several residence halls have been adapted for wheelchair users and some offer private or semi-private bathrooms.
- Students who require personal care assistance are responsible for arranging and financing these services. However, Disability Services can offer assistance in recruiting student aides on campus or contacting local home health care agencies in the Troy area.
- Individual campus tours can be arranged that focus on the accessibility features of buildings and facilities.
- Area bus service and campus shuttle services are accessible, and students may also be eligible to use the regional paratransit service for disabled riders. You may want to consult the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) for more information on their local and regional accessible, fixed-route bus service, as well as their STAR door-to-door paratransit service.
- Students who need assistance in the classroom (e.g., notetakers, testing modifications) should contact Disability Services. Adapted computers and other devices may also be available based on individual need.
- For assistance in using the Library, consult Library Services for Disabled Users at Rensselaer.
For more information on any of the above services, contact Disability Services for Students, Dean of Students Office, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York 12180-3590, send email to dss@rpi.edu, or telephone (518) 276-2746.
