Obtaining a New York State driver's license

Automobiles are expensive to buy, insure, and maintain. However, if you decide that you need your own transportation and purchase a vehicle, you need to register it with New York State, and you must have a New York State driver's license in order to do this.

Having an international driver's license or a driver's license from your home country allows you to drive in the New York State for a period of only 30 days from your arrival. However, you cannot use this card to register a vehicle within New York. If you are going to stay in the state longer than 30 days and also plan to buy, register, and drive a vehicle, you must obtain a New York State driver's license from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Troy Department of Motor Vehicles is located at:

Rensselaer County Office Building
1600 Seventh Avenue
Troy, NY 12180
Phone: (518) 270-2600

The office is open from 8:30am to 4:15pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, and from 8:30am to 7:15pm on Thursday.

Please note that you cannot use your driver's license from your home country or an international driver's license for this purpose. The Department of Motor Vehicles issue licenses and has an excellent booklet on motor vehicle rules.

Motor Vehicle requires a Social Security number to apply. If you do not have a Social Security number, you must get a letter from the Social Security Office in Troy stating that you are not eligible for a Social Security number.

If you have any further questions, the Department of Motor Vehicles issue licenses and has an excellent booklet on motor vehicle rules.
