If your Form I-20 graduation date has expired, then you need to apply for reinstatement to student status with Immigration. You will need to submit the following required documents to the ISSS Office:
- A letter from your advisor or department explaining why this degree is taking longer than your original I-20 stated. Provide a reasonable date as to when you expect to graduate, and remember to be very detailed with your explanation.
- A copy of your award letter (if supported by Rensselaer) or documentation of how you will be supported.
- Completed ISSS Reinstatement to Student Status Form.
- A letter from you explaining why you did not meet your original graduation date.
Hand in your paperwork to the ISSS Office then make an appointment to see Jane Havis, Assistant Dean of Students. The ISSS Office will type you a new I-20 that you will have to sign when you come in for your appointment.
You will submit the following items at your appointment:
- Completed Form I-539
- Check for $300.00 made payable to the Department of Homeland Security.
- Your old I-20
The ISSS Office will send in the application with a cover letter to Immigration.
Please understand that USCIS will expect you to prove to them the reason you fell out of the status was beyond your control, and will look at this very seriously.
