Stories of Hurricane Irene
The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, SALT [Schoharie Area Long Term] Recovery, the New York Folklore Society, the Schoharie Free Library, the Schoharie Colonial Heritage Association, and AmeriCorps VISTA, proudly sponsored the Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service on Monday, January 20, 2014. The event was covered by The Times Union . Additional roundtable discussions will be held over the course of this semester.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Reflection on Service: Stories of Hurricane Irene is a program intended to engage and empower residents and volunteers alike through dialogue about the storm and its impact on the community and the recovery efforts to help the people of historic Schoharie County, situated along the mighty Schoharie Creek. Our goal for the day is to begin to collect and record stories of the storm and the recovery effort so that New Yorkers of the future will have a better understanding of the storm’s impact, the residents’ will to survive, and the efforts of volunteers from across the region and the country to assist the community rebuild.
The event will be held in the social hall of the Middleburgh Reformed Church. The day will consist of a morning workshop on the art of storytelling for volunteers and residents conducted by the New York Folklore Society, which exists to preserve and promote the unique living heritage of the state, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
This will be followed by a luncheon, with guest speaker Congressman Chris Gibson, NY 19th District, who will speak on Dr. King’s motivation to serve and standing up for a cause one believes in.
Following the speaker, the volunteers, residents and community leaders, and AmeriCorps VISTA members will participate in round-table discussions about their experiences in Schoharie. We hope the volunteers and the members of the Schoharie Community who “weathered the storm” will begin to tell and record their stories over the next year about what happened and what drives them to help one another and restore the communities along the Schoharie Creek. In addition, participants will assemble disaster preparedness kits for the American Red Cross. The project will conclude by 4 p.m.
We intend to recognize the volunteers and all participants by listing them by name and broadcasting their recorded stories on the New York Folklore Society website. We are planning two additional volunteer travel dates to Schoharie County in the spring of 2014 to capture more of the history of the storm and the residents of Schoharie County to share and record stories.

participate. All participants will receive lunch and a t-shirt
commemorating the day. Transportation from Troy will be
provided. Participation will be on a first come, first serve
basis, and will be limited to transporation accommodations.
Updates to information will be posted on this website, and will
be emailed to registered participants. A final email will be
sent to registered participants on Friday, January 17, with
