Requirements
- You need to either have a job on the Rensselaer campus, or a co-op job.

Bring a letter from the department on their letterhead
stating the following:
- The name of the department for which you are working
- The name of your supervisor
- How much you are getting paid
- How many hours a week you will be working
- The type of work you will be doing

Fill out the Letter Request Form, which is available in the
student lounge of the ISSS Office, requesting a letter to
obtain a Social Security Number.
- Submit your completed request form and the letter from the department for which you will be working to the ISSS staff.
- The ISSS staff will inform you when you can come back to pick up the letter for the Social Security Office.

Take the following items to the Social Security Office,
which is located in downtown Troy, on the first floor of
500 Federal Street (the medical building near the Green
Island Bridge). The office is open Monday through Friday,
9:00am to 3:00pm.
- Your letter from the ISSS Office
- Letter from your department that you give to the ISSS Office
- Your Passport
- Your I-94 (small white card in your passport)
- DS-2019 or I-20
- When you are at the Social Security Office, you will fill out an application and they will make copies of your immigration documents.
- It takes approximately two to eight weeks for you to receive the Social Security Card in the mail.
- When you receive your Social Security number, you must notify Rensselaer's Payroll Office, which is located in the Rice Building.
